A power failure at a Google data centre in London disrupted banking apps and websites across Europe on Tuesday morning.
It shows how much of Europe’s finance runs on a single cloud zone. One power failure in London, and Europe’s banking apps went dark.
A “power event” in a single Google Cloud zone took down card payments, transfers and logins at Revolut early on Tuesday, and ING Germany customers were locked out of online banking. Users of Lloyds, HSBC and Bank of Scotland also reported problems, though those links are unconfirmed.
Google says the power issue is fixed. For businesses, the bigger story is concentration risk: when many institutions rent the same infrastructure, one failure becomes everyone’s outage.
