Nvidia's board approved an additional $150 billion for its share buyback programme, bringing total authorization to $235 billion. The company expects to spend the full amount by the end of fiscal 2028.

It is the largest share repurchase authorization increase any US company has made.

The timing is the story

Nvidia made the announcement on a rough day for markets. The Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Dow were all trading about 1% lower, pushed down by rising Treasury yields and higher oil prices.

Nvidia went the other way. Its shares were up 2.8% on Monday, and its market value stands at $5.42 trillion.

This also isn't Nvidia's first large buyback this year. It announced an $80 billion programme less than six months ago, in May.

Jensen Huang's said the company's cash generation lets it invest in the technologies driving the AI transition and return capital to shareholders at the same time. Nvidia's profits more than doubled year on year in Q2 2026, to nearly $60 billion. Huang said earlier this month that Nvidia would double the number of chips it sells in 2027.
