The FBI has confirmed what blockchain sleuths suspected within hours: North Korea’s TraderTraitor unit pulled off the biggest crypto robbery in history.
On Saturday the FBI accused North Korea of stealing more than $6 billion from Binance, confirming earlier suspicions from private investigators that the affiliated group TraderTraitor was behind it.
About $6.36B moved out of Binance wallets across ten blockchains, roughly four times the $1.5B Bybit hack of February 2025. The crypto were stolen from Binance wallets across ten chains, most of it in about 20 minutes on 29 October.
Binance says it has used company funds and covered 95% of the stolen tokens and will resume withdrawals in phases. Phased withdrawals start between 0600 and 0900 GMT on Sunday.
The real test starts now. If outflows stay orderly, the exchange contains the damage. If users rush the exits, the heist turns into a liquidity event.
