Markets were already nervous. Oil made it worse.
Bond yields were climbing, with France’s 10-year above 5% and US yields around 5.1%, and investors were questioning whether the AI spending boom will pay off.
Then Brent jumped above $112.
Asia took the biggest hit: the Kospi slid 3.5%, the Hang Seng 3% and the Nikkei 2.7%, with chipmakers like SK Hynix and Tokyo Electron among the biggest losers. India’s Nifty dropped more than 1%. China’s CSI 300 is now 20% below its June peak, a bear market.
Europe’s STOXX 600 fell nearly 1%, and US futures point lower. Oil didn’t cause the sell-off on its own, but it turned existing worries into a broad retreat.
