Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, says hackers stole an estimated $6.3 billion on Thursday, the biggest crypto heist on record.
Binance’s initial investigation traces the breach to a DevOps engineer’s compromised laptop, which let the attacker submit unauthorised withdrawals.
About $3 billion has been frozen so far, most of it in USDT and USDC stablecoins. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs links the attack to TraderTraitor, an elite North Korean hacking group.
Binance has suspended deposits and withdrawals and pledged to cover all losses. Bitcoin fell about 5%, below $77,000.
The theft is roughly four times the previous record, Lazarus Group’s $1.5bn Bybit hack in 2025.
